Today we meet Sonia Mara, Director of Social Media for Willow Wolfe and Contributing Editor for Inspired. Look for articles in Live & Learn featuring her Pinspirations posts.Company Name: I named my company Essay Studios for multiple reasons. S and A are my initials. An ESE according to URBAN dictionary is your close friend or homey. An ESSAY tells a story, which is what I try to help my clients do, tell THEIR story.
Preferred Medium: Graphic design is part of my work, so normally I am in front of a computer using Adobe Creative Suite. In the art world I am an experimenter, trying all mediums, including fabric, yarn, mixed-media, acrylic, clay, papier maché. Currently my art is taking me into watercolor, with an overlay of pen & ink.
What would you call your ‘style’? This has always been my greatest struggle, pinning down my art style. I am drawn to so many different looks. I have never really been one to go through phases, I have all of my phases at once. It is a big reason why I have never made fine art my profession.
I am currently working on Pen & Ink/Watercolor illustrations of bicycle and brewery subjects for a series called BRUCYCLE.
Who are your art heros? I am a huge fan of Pollack. I love how deliberate he was with his paintings, even thought they looked like chaos. I love illustrative work like Charlie Harper and Shag. Wes Anderson. His movies have the most amazing palettes!
Where do you create? When I need to work big, I create on my dining room table. We don’t eat there, mainly because all my supplies are on it. Otherwise I am on the couch! Sometimes I paint on getaways. My friends and I have big 16 person vacays. While they are in the pool or playing bocce, I am usually doing some kind of doodle.
When do you create? Anytime that strikes me, but usually in the evening.
What do you do when you hit a creative block? I usually browse pinterest and thedieline.com, or go to some creative event. An architecture exhibit, an indy movie, a concert.
What do you listen to when you create? Lately it’s been dance music. !!! (chk chk chk) and Holy Ghost. Older 90s hip hop or 70s funk. And Indy bands like Dr. Dog and Delta Spirit.
What other things do you like to do creatively? I just joined a band through this Facebook group called Mystery Band. Groups are somewhat randomly put together. I love music, but don’t really play an instrument. I hope our band sounds ok with my rudimentary bass skills.
What are your passions outside of art? DANCING!! If i could have my dream job, I would want to be a choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance! I don’t have any of the skills, but hey it’s MY dream!
Preferred Tools: I use my Princeton Select brushes for just about anything you would use a brush for. Acrylic, Watercolors, Face Paint, MAKEUP! Can’t wait to try out the Catalyst Tools!
