meet the artist – Danielle Donaldson pt. 2
Here is the second and final half of Danielle’s interview. So much inspiration!!
Where do you create? The Dorm Room
When do you create? I create during all the in between times of my day-to-day
Do you sketch or keep an idea journal? I don’t sketch as much as I should. I am trying to keep a sketch journal this year. I get caught up in wanting everything I draw to look finished. Usually I sketch a lot of new ideas when I am traveling. I keep a file folder full of paper with snippets of inspiration I have printed off or clipped out of magazines and such and put them in the folder. I just grab it when I have to fly or take the train somewhere.
What do you do when you hit a creative block? I would like to say I walk away, but really, if I do, I am stomping my feet loudly. Normally, if it is a pretty serious block, I just pull out blank paper and a mechanical pencil and sketch while I am watching tv – a little couch creative. After a few days, my imagination has kicked in again and I get back to work. Sometimes though, if I am just kinda stuck, I just use a different size canvas, or medium, or color palette. It gets my noggin moving in a different direction.
Do you teach? What and why? I do! I took part in Studying Under the Masters. AND! I just launched registration for my first solo online class on jeanneoliver.ning.com. It is called creativeGIRL: The Land of Light and Shadows. It is going to be full of good ideas on how to give your art depth with layers, light and shadow. I hope to add some in-person workshops in the next year. Fingers-crossed.
What do you listen to when you create? SO many different things – from James Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Shakey Graves, Lisa Loeb, The English Beat, etc. Totally depends on my mood.
What other things do you like to do creatively? I do love a good craft. Mostly to make my house prettier.
Tell us about any commercial art endeavors: My art is on all sorts of things floating around out there – coffee mugs, canvases, fabric, and kitchey little stuff. All through Painted Planet Licensing.
What are your passions outside of art? I am currently adjusting to empty-nest-ish-ness. Mostly I LOVE keeping in touch with my two college kids.
Preferred Tools: Birch panels, watercolors, mechanical pencils, and white pens and paint
Where do you like to purchase supplies? Is there something special about this retailer that you would like to share? I love nothing more than getting a DickBlick catalogue in the mail and scheming up new things and hitting the place order button.
