Frequently Asked Questions

I've never painted before.  Can anyone come to Willow's classes and seminars?

Willow Wolfe has developed a style of teaching which breaks the artistic method into easy to understand sections. A line drawing is provided, thus removing any intimidation or the need for previous experience. Willow will then gradually builds the skills necessary to complete the project. Teaching the arts involves understanding the variety of students and their needs. Its imperative a teacher is able to assess skill and comfort levels and adjust accordingly. Not to mention that Willow Wolfe believes that art is a vehicle for discovery and transformation and that a class or seminar should be fun and relaxed! There is no substitution for a class with Willow. A great beginner class sets the foundation for future success. However, should time and distance make it difficult to attend there are a variety of skill building pattern packets and packages available.

What kinds of seminars are there for painting and what kind of costs are associated? What do they include?

Willow Wolfe teaches hundreds of seminars a year. There are many different distinctions all of which are fantastic vehicles for growth and learning.

1. The One Day Seminar. These are held at The Willow Wolfe Studio and hosted at locations all over the world. Many one day seminars are grouped over a weekend where you may do a different project each day.   Almost all of our one day seminars are beginner. That doesn't mean someone has never painted. It simply means we begin with the basics of how to hold, clean and use your brushes. We almost always complete the entire project in a one day seminar. Depending on where it is taught and who is hosting it some supplies may be included and some may not. Usually the studio supplies the use of paint and mediums and the student is responsible for their brushes, tools and surface preparation. If a host is bringing in a teacher remember that the host is usually responsible for the teachers fees, hotel, food and transport. This is a tremendous responsibility and a lot of work for hosts.

2. Convention Class. These are slightly faster paced classes. They are great trial runs if a student wants to experiment and branch out. Many conventions slot classes into short time periods which means it might not be feasible to complete the entire project. Many teachers supply a little paint to take home and finish (bring small containers). Most often the surface is prepared and supplied, a pattern packet and color photos as well as the use of paint during class. The student is responsible for basic supplies, brushes, tools, stencils, add-ons etc. I always suggest you bring buddy cups. Read the supply lists carefully...as well as the language. Many teachers will include the "use of" items. This doesn't mean they are yours to keep. We are frequently asked what the supply fees do include. Firstly, teachers are responsible for their own transport, food and lodging. The teacher is responsible for the purchase and preparation of your surfaces. In the average Willow Wolfe seminar this involves four or five steps. A pattern packet is created, printed and supplied and paint and mediums are supplied. The teacher pays the shipping to the event, any duties where applicable and often additional handling charges. All of which is broken down and incorporated into a supply fee.

What is a Pattern Packet?

A pattern packet is a package of information containing a color photograph, a line drawing and instructions on how to complete that particular project. If you are a beginner it is best to purchase a packet designed to "Build Skills" and to double check that it states that it is a beginner. Many pattern packets include color worksheets which are of great help to new and experienced painters. Books are also great ways to get started.

What is a PDF Pattern Packet?

Many of our designs have been put into PDF format so that they can be electronically distributed. When purchased a key or code is sent to the purchaser who may then download and view the packet on their computer, usually using Adobe Acrobat. They may then print this packet for personal use. The great feature is that its instant and there are no shipping costs or wait times. There are very strict copyright rules when it comes to any pattern packet and one should be aware that packets may not be reproduced, forwarded, copied or distributed in any manner.
